Sardinia 1008201 Sardinia A lovely clear gloss finish photo postcard showing the burning wreck of the Sardinia. She was built in 1888 as the Gulf of Corcovado and served Ellerman as the Sardinia from 1902 to 1908. On 25th November 1908 she suffered explosions and a fire as she was departing from Valletta and driven on to the beach near Fort Ricasoli, Kalkara, Malta. There was large loss of life amongst the pilgrims on board bound for Mecca. A little corner and edge wear and light album corner marks / indentations. A surface bend with light surface crinkle across the bottom left corner. A little surface marking to the front with an ink mark on the bottom edge centre left. Extremely light marking / ageing to the reverse. (VG-) £8.99

There was large loss of life amongst the pilgrims on board bound for Mecca. Card is postally used in Malta in December 1908, and the sender talks about witnessing the incident. A little corner and edge wear, with album corner indentations and a small dink to the top right corner tip. Impression from postal cancellation top left. A couple of surface impressions and a little light marking to the front. Very light marking / ageing to the reverse. (VG-) SOLD!
