She was built in 1896 for services in the Elbe to Helgoland. From 1904 to 1905 she was chartered for services from Genoa to San Remo, Nice and Monaco. Card is by Muhlmeister & Johler of Hamburg. She was built in 1907 as the Rotterdam, becoming the Sommelsdijk for Holland America Line in 1909. On 21st April 1910 she suffered a fire in Rotterdam and was broken up later that year. Storstad 1345001 Storstad A/S Maritim, Norway A scarce Valentine & Sons printed postcard showing the damaged bows of the Norwegian collier Storstad following her fatal collision in the Saint Lawrence River with the Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Ireland on 29th May 1914, during which the liner sank with heavy loss of life. The card shows the damaged bows of the Storstad and also landing of the dead at Quebec from the government steamer Lady Grey. A little light corner and edge wear and very light album corner marks. Strathnaver & Strathaird 1336901 Strathnaver & Strathaird P&O A photo postcard by Sankeys of Barrow in Furness, featuring the P&O liners Strathnaver and Strathaird under construction at Vickers-Armstrongs, Barrow in Furness fitting out wharf. The date of the photo would be after the Strathaird (right of photo) was launched on 18th July 1931 and before the Strathnaver (left of photo) was completed on 2nd Sept 1931. The tug is the Cartmel of 1907. To the left of the photo are two T.& J. Harrison cargo ships Statesman (built 1914) and Author (built 1914). Minimal corner wear and clean to the front.
